Jaclyn Toh, a senior majoring in geography, is the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Paul Olum Award.

Olum was the 13th president of University of Oregon from 1980 to 1989.  The UO Alumni Association awards this trophy annually to honor a graduating student who best exemplifies Olum’s commitment to intellectual growth, integrity and the university’s well-being.

Dan G. Wieden, this year’s well-deserving Distinguished Alumnus recipient, is every journalism and business student’s favorite success story. Wieden graduated in 1967 with a degree in journalism from the UO and is the co-founder, creative director and president of the internationally renowned Wieden & Kennedy advertising agency. As the story goes, Wieden began with just a typewriter and vision as he worked with his first client, Nike, to help create their brand image.

Jeffrey D. Whitty, a playwright, actor and UO alumnus, helped take the 2004 Tony Awards Ceremony by storm. Whitty won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for “Avenue Q” less than one year after graduating from the UO. “Avenue Q” won several other awards, including Best Musical, after its Broadway debut on July 31, 2003. “Avenue Q” is touring cities nationwide until summer's end.

The Cheryl Ramberg Ford and Allyn Ford Alumni Center will be part of a new gateway to campus along with the new arena and the new Academic Learning Center. Few institutions have a site that so naturally allows an alumni center to also serve as the university’s welcome center for all visitors to campus.

After working for several years toward the departmentalization of the University's Ethnic Studies Program, students and faculty who have supported the movement finally have cause to celebrate.

Football season cannot arrive fast enough for Duck fans.  The first glimpse will come in the friendly confines of Autzen Stadium when the Ducks face northwest rival Washington on August 30th.  The first road test, however, comes two weeks later in a more hostile environment on Saturday, September 13 at Purdue University.
