Journalism Grad and J-School Associate Professor Join Forces to Create "Buzz" for SOJC
J-School ProfessorsThe UO School of Journalism Advertising Program is grateful for the collaboration between the J-School and Steve O’Leary ’69.  O’Leary joined forces with UO Associate Professor Kim Sheehan to publish a book on helping small businesses use word of mouth advertising.  At the same time, the pair also created a lot of buzz for the SOJC’s ad program.

Dept. of Human Physiology Research to Heighten Helmet Safety for Soldiers

SoldierHelmetDr. John Halliwill, associate professor at the UO Department of Human Physiology and Co-Director of the Exercise and Environmental Physiology Lab is teaming up with a local company called “Oregon Aero.”   Halliwill’s research with Army cadets in the Department’s environmental chamber replicates the climate of Iraq so that scientists can examine the functioning of various types of helmets in extreme heat. These tests are providing Oregon Aero with valuable study data to produce helmets with increased safety performance.

Senior Send Off

Senior Send OffThe Senior Send Off, an annual event organized jointly by the UOAA and the Flight, the student alumni association, was held on June 5th to celebrate graduating seniors’ transition from students to alumni. UOAA Staff and Flight members handed out raffle tickets, worked the prize wheel and helped distribute over 900 root beer floats to seniors.  The event allowed students to take a study break during Dead Week (the week before finals) and have some fun.

introDUCKtion

This July, over 5,000 incoming students and their parents will visit campus to take part in IntroDUCKtion.  The program, offered by the Student Orientations Programs office, allows new students to become acquainted with campus while discussing university life with faculty members and current students.  Over 90% of incoming freshmen participated last year, learning about academic requirements, course offerings and academic support services.

Janie Thomas '67 and Husband Jonathan Levy Create "Adventure Aid" to Give Back to People Around the World

Adventure AidThe creation of “Adventure Aid” demonstrates how strong alumni connections can help others in need worldwide.  Retired physician Jonathan Levy and his wife, UO Alumna Janie Thomas are the founders of Adventure Aid, a non-profit, local organization that offers life-changing experiences to people who want to give back, help the environment and travel the world.

Corey duBrowa '88, named President of UOAA Board of Directors

Corey duBrowaduBrowa, a 1988 graduate of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communications, has been tapped as the 98th President of the UOAA Board of Directors. 

The Board of Directors serves annually and is the governing body of the UOAA.  It is comprised of approximately fifty UO alumni and representatives from a broad range of class years, areas of study, student and community involvement and geographic location.

Portland Rose Fest Watch Party Success!
Rose ParadeOver 100 UO alumni and friends had the best seats in the house for the 2008 Portland Rose Festival Parade. The UOAA, along with the Portland Business Alliance, hosted a sold-out watch party in the UO-Portland's White Stag Building on the third floor School of Journalism George S. Turnbull Center.

Clark Honors College Alumni, Students & Friends Invited to Portland Reception in August

Honors CollegeAll Clark Honors College (CHC) alumni, students and friends are invited to a reception at the home of Doug Ragen ’64 (Economics), CHC Alumni Advisory Council member, in the Portland area, at 6 p.m., Wednesday, August 27.

The program includes a welcome by CHC’s first dean, David Frank, professor of rhetoric, and an address by Professor Roxann Prazniak entitled, “Siena on the Silk Roads.” Prazniak will draw from her recent experience teaching in Siena, Italy, and her extensive research on the highly developed Eurasian network of commercial, diplomatic and artistic interconnections in the pre Renaissance period.

Her courses include Siena on the Silk Trail, Arts and Science from Giotto to Galileo, and Mediterranean/Himalayan Routes in the Making of World History, and she is currently working on an article on her recent research.
