| Elizabeth Leonard ’08 Serves in 15th Class of AmeriCorps |
On Monday, November 3, Elizabeth Leonard ’08 deployed to begin work on her first service project of the year with the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), an AmeriCorps program. Leonard arrived at NCCC’s Southwest Region Campus in Denver and began training on Monday, October 6, for 10 months of full-time service with AmeriCorps NCCC. This training emphasized teamwork, leadership development, communication, service learning, and certification by the American Red Cross. Founded in 1994, AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential national service program created to assist with disaster relief, improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, and address unmet human needs. This year marks its 15th anniversary.

According to Jeff Lamb, a visiting Professor in Interior Architecture at the University of Oregon, Frank Gehry is an icon in the architecture circle. Gehry designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Experience Music Project in Seattle. “He’s like the man,” says Lamb. More importantly though, Gehry inspired one of the most talented architectural designers that ever came out of the University’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts: Jeff Lamb himself.

| Dr. Hill M. Walker M.A. ’64 Ph.D. ’67 Awarded the 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award |
Hill M. Walker, a professor at University of Oregon College of Education, received the 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award at the annual meeting for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). Established in 1971, AUCD is a membership organization dedicated to research, education, leadership, training policy development, and direct service for people with disabilities. The award is the highest accolade presented by AUCD and is given to individuals or organizations making distinguished lifetime contributions to people with developmental disabilities and their families.

| Puget Sound Alumni Chapter: Connecting the Ducks at Biz Lunches |
Puget Sound “Biz Lunches” started with a group of three Seattle-based Ducks who were interested in getting a group together for career networking based on their allegiance to their alma mater. President of the Puget Sound Alumni Chapter James Betzer ’90 along with Larry LaMotte ’87 and Greg Larson ’01 organized the first Biz Lunch in October 2007 with a total of six attendees, a number that grew to 30 within just a few months.

The Portland Alumni Chapter hosted the 26th Annual Holiday Music Fest earlier this month at the White Stag Building in downtown Portland. This special evening brought out alumni of all ages who came together to celebrate the holidays with fellow Ducks.

Oregon Wins Second Straight NCAA
Cross Country Title |
Oregon’s cross country team made national news for winning their second straight NCAA cross country title at Indiana State University on November 23, 2008. The team’s victory was led by senior Galen Rupp’s dramatic first place finish. Rupp, from Portland, Oregon, also received the Division I Cross Country Athlete of the Year, becoming just the third Duck to win the NCAA cross country title. Rupp was also named the Division I Men’s West Region Athlete of the Year
