UO Professor Emeritus Jim Klonoski is remembered for helping others reach their full potential
Jim KlonoskiProfessor Emeritus Jim Klonoski passed away on Friday, Jan. 30th, at age 83. A Celebration of Life was held on Feb. 6th, at The John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts in Eugene, Oregon.

All-American basketball player for the University of Oregon, and epitomized the "Kamikaze Kids" under coach Dick Harter with his all-out, fearless hustle and relentless desire to win. Lee played four seasons for the Ducks between 1972 and 1976.

From Presidents Taft and Harding to Jack Dempsey fights and Pele’s last game, PGE Park in Portland has been a part of it all.  The famed stadium in SW Portland is now gearing for war, a Civil War that is, between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers.  The teams last met during the 1980-81 season, and are looking to renew the rivalry.

UO’s Carmen Seremeta named Pac-Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Carmen SeremetaUniversity of Oregon senior Carmen Seremeta was named the Pac-Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week for February 2-8, 2009. This is the second time a UO student has received this honor since the Pac-10 started naming tennis players in 2006. Deciding to join UO's tennis team was an easy choice for Seremeta who says, “The women on the team stood out as having the closest team.” This camaraderie, along with the 20-30 hours they spend practicing each week has helped the team to be ranked 46th in the nation.

Olympic Trials Finalist Jordan Hasay Picks UO

Jordan HasayThousands of fans serenaded Jordan Hasay with “Come ... to ... Oregon! Come ... to ... Oregon!” chants after the Arroyo Grande resident and now-Mission Prep senior set the girls national record of 4:14.50 in a semifinal at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trlals on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene last summer.  To read more from the Santa Maria Times...

Richard Lariviere announced as finalist for University of Oregon President
Mortar BoardThe finalist candidate for the new president of the University of Oregon was announced March 2 by George Pernsteiner, chancellor of the Oregon University System. After consultation with a search committee chaired by State Board of Higher Education (Board) member John von Schlegell, Pernsteiner said he was recommending that Dr. Richard W. Lariviere, currently the executive vice-chancellor and provost at the University of Kansas, be appointed by the Board to lead the University of Oregon, pending a visit to Oregon that would begin March 10. » Learn More
Mortar Board Welcomes 50 Top Students from Junior Class
Mortar BoardThe University of Oregon's Mortar Board chapter has invited 50 prospective members to join the national honor society that recognizes college seniors for excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership and service. Top students from the junior class were invited to apply to join the group, and students from all majors were selected based on leadership experience and dedication to community service. The students will be initiated May 2nd in the Gerlinger Lounge.

Pioneering Storyteller’s Award Winning Nonfiction Chosen in Honor of 2009 Sesquicentennial
Lauren Kessler Author and University of Oregon journalism professor Lauren Kessler has written five works of narrative nonfiction. Among them is the Oregon Book Award-winning Stubborn Twig, which was chosen as the book for all Oregonians to read in honor of the state’s 2009 sesquicentennial. Piano Trumpets will sound and voices will ring out in celebration on March 6 for the grand opening and dedication of the UO's newly expanded and renovated MarAbel B. Frohnmayer Music Building.

UO Geology Professor Greg Retallack Donates Fossil Collection to Cultural Museum
Greg RetallackThe result is a vast assortment of fossils that offer glimpses of the earth’s ancient past. From 13,000-year-old woolly mammoth hairs found in Siberia to 3.5 billion-year-old stromatolitic limestone unearthed in Western Australia to leaf and fruit impressions from Antarctica, the fossils help to establish the chronology of life on Earth.

Sign of things to come -
UO stays in step with history, asks to put its own name on landmark
UO White Stag The more things change, the more they stay the same, especially when it comes to the iconic neon sign atop the University of Oregon’s White Stag Block in Old Town Portland. Over the sign’s sixty-nine-year-history, changes to its wording have been made three times, each to reflect the building’s current tenant. So it’ll be nothing new on March 9, when the sign’s owner and creator, Ramsay Signs, asks the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission for permission to change the sign so it reads, “University of Oregon.”
