Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Art from The Farber Collection

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

Making its West Coast premiere at the JSMA, this exhibit dramatizes the extraordinary production and innovation of Cuban artists over the past century. It represents a variety of styles and media including painting and photography. The exhibit captures a wide range of experiences and points of view, reflecting the rich and complex experiences and expressions of artists who share a common love for Cuba. (Free admission.)

 

Walk a Mile in These Shoes — the Stories They Tell

UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History

Museum visitors will be able to have a hands-on, feet-in, multimedia experience that explores many aspects of footwear and their history. Shoes are not just protection for our feet; they flaunt an infinite array of styles, sizes and materials. This exhibit takes a look at traditional footwear from around the world, styles from decades past, and the shoes of famous people. From 10,000-year-old sagebrush bark sandals to stilettos to a rock star's boots -- shoes always make a statement. (Free admission.)

 

If the Shoe Fits — Kids Contemplate Shoes

UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History

Kids get into the act -- creating artwork that tells the story of their own shoes. This companion exhibit features contour line drawings and writing about shoes that are significant to the students. The artwork of twenty-eight students from two 4th grade classes at Clear Lake Elementary School will be on display. (Free admission.)

Kick off the fall term with a huge outdoor concert on the Memorial Quad with Rogue Wave, Greenlander and The Daveys. Sponsored by the Cultural Forum and ASUO.

BWA's Back to School Jump Off Party

Vet's Club, 16th and Willamette

Come "Dressed to Impress" as the Black Women of Achievement and Leon Murry kick off the school year in style. Admission is $2 before 11 pm; $5 after 11 pm. 18 and older only, ID's required. Black Women of Achievement serves as a foundation for the empowerment of African American Women. It is an avenue for all people to come together and discuss issues and challenges facing African American Women and find ways deal with such issues as a community.

Fall Movie Night brings Run Lola Run (original German title Lola rennt) to campus. The movie is a 1998 film by German screenwriter and director Tom Tykwer, starring Franka Potente as Lola and Moritz Bleibtreu as Manni. The story follows a woman who needs to retrieve 100,000 Deutsche Mark in 20 minutes to save her boyfriend's life.
