Anonymous donation to fund
SOJC presence in Portland
With the largest gift in its history, the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication is planning to put life into a longstanding goal of having a presence in Portland. At the January 29 kick-off gala launching the public phase of Campaign Oregon: Transforming Lives, it was announced that an anonymous donor made a $15 million donation with $6.5 million allocated to the SOJC.

UO Launches Ad Campaign in Portland
As part of a growing UO effort to boost its presence in Portland, the university kicked off in December a four-month ad campaign in the Oregonian, the Portland Business Journal and on Oregon Public Broadcasting Radio.

Award Winning Writer Louis Menand
to Speak in Portland
The Oregon Humanities Center will host writer and literary critic Louis Menand as the 2004-2005 Kritikos Professor in the Humanities. He will be giving a lecture on the subject of the Cold War and the arts on Thursday, May 12, in the Mayfair Ballroom of the Benson Hotel.

Women’s Athletics Letterwinners’ Celebration
The University of Oregon athletic department is launching an effort to celebrate the past, present and future of Women’s Athletics at the University of Oregon. Plans are underway for a campaign that will culminate with the presentation of varsity “O” letters to former female student-athletes at a celebratory banquet tentatively scheduled for the Fall/Winter of the 2005-06 season. Varsity letters will be awarded to female student-athletes who did not receive a varsity letter after participating on a varsity sports team or in intercollegiate athletics competition.

Business School Grads Network
The Lundquist Alumni Network (LAN) is a multifaceted organization of graduates from the UO’s Lundquist College of Business (LCB) served in part by the UO Alumni Association. LAN focuses on raising awareness about the Lundquist College of Business in the Portland and Northwest business communities, providing an active connection among graduates of the Lundquist College of Business and fostering continuous exchange between graduates and the programs (academic and career-oriented) offered at the Lundquist College of Business.

College of Education Celebrates Educators and Local Supporters
On March 2, it will be a night of “Food! Facts! and Festivities!” at McMenamin’s Kennedy School in Northeast Portland when the University of Oregon and College of Education Alumni Associations partner to host an evening celebrating the Columbia Regional Awards and to present “Y’talkin’ t’me?” - a reflection on teaching and reaching kids in a high stimulus world.

Scholarship Winners Enjoy
Freshman Year on Campus
Jocelyn Noonan and Sam Johnson are among 3,009 freshman that entered the University of Oreogn in the fall of 2004. They have different backgrounds, interests and goals but they do have one thing in common: each is a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Portland Chapter of the University of Oregon Alumni Association.

East Metro Economic Alliance
has UO Presence
Gerry Gast, associate professor of architecture, and Portland graduate students Harper Bates, Scott Mannhard, and Juan Tomas Nuñez recently presented design work on the Oregon Science and Technology Park (OSTP) to the East Metro Economic Alliance, a partnership of the cities of Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview, and Wood Village. City officials, business leaders, and the four city mayors attended the December presentation.

Employers and Alumni Meet and Mingle
Sometimes it can be a little intimidating to look for a job – sometimes it takes knowing the right person, and sometimes you just need the opportunity to meet the right person. During the January 11th career networking event at the downtown University of Oregon Portland Center, more than 160 alumni gathered to meet with potential employers and each other.
