On March 15, the University of Oregon Alumni Association and the College of Education honored community leaders, educators and organizations in the Portland community that have made significant contributions to children and families.
The event, which was held at the Multnomah Athletic Club, individually honored each of the award recipients and a Professor in Educational Leadership and Director of the Center for Educational Policy Research David Conley gave a presentation titled “College Knowledge: What Students Need to Succeed in Entry-level University Courses.”
Among the honorees were three UO Alumni:
Distinguished Alumna, Columbia Region
Jane Stickney, Ph.D. ’96
Asst. Superintendent for Instruction
West Linn-Wilsonville School District
Jane Stickney Ph.D. ’96 has demonstrated her commitment, caring, and clear love of children through many years of teaching, administration and scholarly pursuit in the Northwest. She embodies vision and substance in her current role as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Stickney began her teaching career in 1968 in the Yakima Public Schools, was an elementary principal and instructional coordinator in the West Lin-Wilsonville School District, helps teach in the UO Doctoral/Licensure program in the Portland metro area, and is a mentor for aspiring administrators.
In remarks to the Oregon Educational Leadership Summit she outlined her hopes for Reading as a Gateway to Learning while remembering the voice of a child. “A little third grade boy summed it up for his principal. The little boy said it is really very simple: We need learning and fun. Those words are now written on the wall in the principal’s office and following the child’s words his principal has added…and nothing without joy. I believe that Oregon still holds the promise of opportunity. Oregon is still the place where a child can stand and grow.”
Distinguished Alumna, Northwest Region
Retired High School Teacher
Rosiland Lund, ‘64
Rosiland Lund ’64 has made significant contributions to Glencoe High School, the Hillsboro School District, and the entire community and is also known as a tremendous mentor. Her innovative and creative teaching strategies kept students engaged and excited about great literature and writing. In addition, she was the first teacher in the Hillsboro District to receive a fellowship for the Oregon Writing Project, which led to her changing the district's way of teaching writing. Because of her engaging manner in working with students, Ros has produced numerous award-winning writers including a current best selling author, Lisa Gardner. Many of her students continue to correspond with Lund, seeking her advice and sharing their life's stories and work with her -- truly a tribute to a dedicated educator.
Throughout her career, Lund chaired or co-chaired five levy elections, spearheaded the drive to build two schools in Hillsboro, was named District’s Educator of the Year, was a Glencoe High School Teacher of the Year, and was actively engaged with Oregon Education Association on special projects and chaired many education reform committees. She also procured a grant through the National Education Association (NEA) to investigate Education Reform and wrote a paper that was read at the NEA convention.
Lund also remains connected to the university, giving generously of to the University of Oregon as a volunteer to the College of Education Dean's Advancement Council.
Educational Excellence, Columbia Region
Doree Jarboe, ’62
Music Director
Grant High School, Portland
Doree Jarboe ’62, the Music Director and teacher at Grant High School, exhibits excellence in education by setting high standards. Her goal is to make every kid she comes in contact with forever love music. She expects her choir students to perform at their best and also sets high standards outside of the choir. Her students affectionately call her “Queen B” for her tenacity as a task master. Jarboe has developed some of the state’s top choral talent over many years. She promotes the idea that “an open mouth opens doors” and she doesn’t mean talking in class. She works a grueling schedule to offer as many opportunities for students as she can find. She participates in well over 70 events a year and has sung at events across the country and Europe.
“Speaking as a parent, Doree Jarboe is the type of teacher that every parent would want for their child,” said Grant High School principal Toni Hunter. “As a principal, she is the type of teacher that you want on your staff. We have one class (Acappella Choir) and we can actually put (with her support) 200 students in it. She is organized and her classes are so welcoming to students. She is a gift to education!”
