A University of Oregon partnership with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and PeaceHealth, Oregon Region, first proposed in the fall of 2004, continues to examine opportunities to train physicians in Oregon and also address an anticipated medical work force shortage.

| Fords to receive 2006 Pioneer Award |
The University of Oregon will present Cheryl Ramberg Ford ’66 and Allyn C. Ford of Roseburg with the 2006 Pioneer Award at a gala reception and dinner beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, at the Governor Hotel, 614 SW 11th Ave., Portland.

Portland Judge Clifford Freeman
to receive 2006 Frohnmayer Award for Public Service |
The 2006 Dave Frohnmayer Award for Public Service will be presented to Multnomah Circuit Court Judge Clifford Freeman at a Portland banquet April 21. “To me, he personifies the qualities of a good judge, a public servant, and a mentor he doesn't seem to be affected by his own considerable power as he goes about living an exemplary life for the good of his community,” said Ellen Rosenblum, Oregon Court of Appeals judge who has known Freeman for 30 years.

| Convocation 2006 Save the Date |
Billy Collins, U.S. poet laureate between 2001 and 2003, will deliver this year’s convocation address on Sept. 24 at McArthur Court. 1601 University St., Eugene. Collins, who also is a Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College, has published eight collections of poetry, including Questions about Angels and The Art of Drowning.

Expanded Portland Center
could double enrollment |
New and expanding Portland programs have prompted the University of Oregon to seek a larger space for its downtown center. “Establishing a Portland Center that is big enough for our current and future needs is an important goal for the university,” said John Moseley, senior vice president and provost.

Kritikos lecturer explores
God in the 21st century |
Bishop John Shelby Spong, whose books have sold more than a million copies, will give a free public lecture in Portland as the 2005-2006 Kritikos Professor in the Humanities. His lecture, “Can 21st Century People Believe in God with Integrity?” will be held at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, in the Mayfair Ballroom of the Benson Hotel, 309 Southwest Broadway.

| Lorry Lokey pledges $12.5 million for University of Oregon education building |
San Francisco businessman and philanthropist Lorry Lokey, who says his Portland elementary school teachers, started him on the road to success, pledged $10 million to the University Of Oregon College of Education on March 1 for its new building project and then increased his pledge with a $2.5-million challenge gift.

The Oregon Business Institute (OBI) and the Oregon Executive MBA program (OEMBA) officially opened in downtown Portland at 200 Market Street on Feb. 16. The new facility provides expanded executive education offerings and services to benefit Portland’s business community, alumni, the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, and the region’s economy.

Welcomes First Guest |
The School of Journalism and Communication’s George S. Turnbull Portland Center welcomed Jackie Spinner of the Washington Post as its first guest in late February. Spinner recently served as the Post’s bureau chief in Baghdad. While in Portland, she visited with fellow journalists to discuss the challenges of modern-day war coverage.

Legal thinker and national commentator Erwin Chemerinsky will keynote a conference for Oregon judges and appellate attorneys on the courts’ role in disentangling church and state on Friday, March 24 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at Portland’s World Trade Center, 121 SW Salmon. Chemerinsky, named one of the top 20 legal thinkers by Legal Affairs magazine in 2005, also is a well-known commentator on the constitution, civil rights, and current policy issues.

| UO Sustainability Leadership Program Awards First Certificate of Completion |
Tyson Haworth, operations manager at Organically Grown Company, completed the UO Sustainability Leadership Program Certificate of Completion in winter 2005. The certificate was officially presented to Haworth by program coordinator Ruta Stabina in Portland on February 24, 2006.
