| UO prepares for move to Old Town, expanded presence in Portland |
Last month, the University of Oregon and Portland’s Venerable Group, Inc. accepted the keys to the historic White Stag Building from the Naito family, long-time owners of the landmark structure. The ceremony symbolized the change in use that will occur when the university moves its Portland programs to the building on the signature White Stag Block in Old Town Portland. Remodeling is already underway in anticipation of a January 2008 opening.

| University of Oregon receives gifts totaling $10.2 million to recruit, retain faculty |
More than $10 million in recent gifts will help the University of Oregon recruit and retain outstanding faculty members. The funds will be critical in the university’s efforts to replace the wave of top professors expected to retire over the next 10 years.

The third annual Oregon Economic Forum focused on the growing problem of health care costs and the burden being placed on the competitiveness of Oregon’s private employers. The forum, which is sponsored by the University of Oregon, took place on Oct. 11 in Portland.

Turnbull Center links UO
to Portland’s media professionals |
Officially opened in January of this year, the George S. Turnbull Center has quickly become a vibrant entity in Portland, the state’s media center. The Center’s Senior Experience program combines half-day, paid internships with late-day classes in Portland for School of Journalism and Communications (SOJC) undergraduate students.

Word is spreading all over Portland that the University of Oregon is preparing to move to Old Town and TriMet’s MAX light rail system is helping carry the news. A variety of MAX trains are outfitted with messaging denoting that the UO is “Flocking to Old Town, January 2008.”

| “Crisis Communication” launches workshop series at School of Journalism and Communication’s Turnbull Center |
A series of two-credit workshops in strategic communication are being offered at the School of Journalism and Communication’s George S. Turnbull Portland Center this term. Students in “Crisis Communication,” the first of three workshops geared toward working professionals, are spending five weeks participating in role-playing exercises, meeting with other professionals, and learning to manage emergency and crisis situations in their organizations.

Landscape architect Peter Walker will be presenting a lecture on landscape architecture and urban design as part of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts’ John Yeon Lecture Series in November.
