Officially opened in January of this year, the George S. Turnbull Center has quickly become a vibrant entity in Portland, the state’s media center. The Center’s Senior Experience program combines half-day, paid internships with late-day classes in Portland for School of Journalism and Communications (SOJC) undergraduate students.
The center also features panel presentations on “Emerging Issues in Communication.” In early September, SOJC Associate Dean and Turnbull Center Director Al Stavitsky moderated “No Static at All: Radio in the Digital Age,” a panel discussion including April Baer of OPB Radio; Dennis Constantine and Sheila Hamilton of KINK Radio; and SOJC advertising instructor Dave Koranda, who discussed profound changes to the oldest electronic medium.
Plans call for the Center to expand when the UO moves to its new location in Old Town in January 2008. “The possibilities for what we can do in Portland will increase exponentially,” said SOJC Dean Tim Gleason.
