San Diego Ducks hosts its annual “Taste of Oregon” event

Ducks Gather in San Diego to Sample Oregon Wines While Raising Scholarship Money for UO Students

The San Diego Ducks will gather once again for the 11th Annual Taste of Oregon event, featuring wine from Eugene’s Sweet Cheeks Winery, on April 26. The chapter hosts this event each year, raising funds for scholarships that are given to incoming UO freshmen from the San Diego area.

This year, the group welcomes two guest alumni speakers, Jennifer Jones ’98 and Mike Jones ’97. Jennifer graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in psychology, and later earned her PhD degree in clinical psychology while studying at Alliant University and the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She has a private practice in Pacific Palisades, California, and is the founder of GoodLifeAcademy.me, a personalized online learning service that aims to help people reach “financial freedom paired with purpose, depth, joy and passion.” She also has a book coming out, Entrepreneur Shift: Mastering the Psychology of Success, teaching readers how to develop full potential.

Mike Jones graduated from the Lundquist College of Business in 1997 with a degree in business administration, focusing on international business and marketing. He currently serves as the CEO and founder of Science, an angel investing and advising company to startup businesses on the West Coast. Mike formerly served as the president of Myspace, and is also the former senior vice president of AOL. In college, Mike opened his first web consulting business and eventually merging it with PBJ Digital, a firm serving roughly 200 companies including Sony and UPN.

On top of premiere wine sampling from Sweet Cheeks Winery and successful alumni guest speakers, the event also hosts a raffle and silent auction. The silent auction will showcase more than 25 items including Duck attire, Nike clothing and golf gear, and UO houseware, tailgating, and BBQ essentials. All of the proceeds from the registration of the event, the silent auction, and the raffle will benefit scholarship funds awarded to one or more high school seniors in the San Diego area attending the UO.

Sweet Cheeks Winery, a popular winery outside Eugene overlooking the Briggs Hill Valley, will highlight four wines that will be paired with delicious Northwest-inspired cuisine. The 2012 Vintage Riesling, 2012 Estate Pinot Gris, 2009 Vintage Pinot Noir, and 2010 Vintage Barrel Select Syrah will complement tasty dishes such as cheeses, turkey sliders, salmon, braised beef short ribs, roasted potatoes, and much more. There will also be a coffee and dessert “bite” station for those with a sweet tooth.

The evening full of all things UO and Oregon is partnered with The Lucky Duck Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by alumnus Pat Kilkenny ’74 and his wife, Stephanie. The Lucky Duck Foundation raises awareness and funds for various charities, as well as promotes volunteerism in the San Diego community.
