With a new governing board, capital campaign and strategic planning effort, this great university is about to secure its rightful place among the institutions that embody academic excellence.
Today, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the individual who will build upon the great work that has been done by so many here.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the University of Oregon, it is my great pleasure to introduce to you the next president of this great institution, Michael H. Schill.
Mr. Schill comes to us from the University of Chicago where he has been the Dean and Harry N. Wyatt Professor of Law since 2010. We are very excited to have Michael join the University of Oregon community as president.
When we began this search eight months ago, it was clear that this university needed a leader who brings to the table a creative vision, focused energy, unquestioned integrity and a passion for educating students. Michael Schill is that leader.
Prior to joining the University of Chicago, Michael served as dean of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law from 2004 to 2009. His career has also included tenured faculty appointments as Professor of Law and Urban Planning at New York University and Professor of Law and Real Estate at the University of Pennsylvania.
I encourage you to review Michael's curriculum vitae, available here, and see for yourself the level of experience he will bring to our university. A 1980 summa cum laude graduate of Princeton, he earned his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1984. In 2004, he founded the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at New York University, which has become one of the nation’s leading research centers on housing and the built environment.
In the coming weeks and months, we will be working to bring Michael up to speed with all that is happening at the University of Oregon. He will be visiting our campuses in Eugene and Portland, and also meeting with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
Throughout the transition, the university will continue to be managed by the exceptional guiding hands of Interim President Scott Coltrane, and Interim Provost Frances Bronet. Thanks to their leadership, this university has continued to move significantly forward on key matters, including the development of a strategic plan. There is a strong foundation upon which we will continue to build. This board and this university owe them a debt of gratitude for their work during this critical time.
The Board of Trustees is proud to welcome President Michael H. Schill to usher in a new era of creativity, discovery, innovation, and excellence at the University of Oregon.
