Oregon Pride Recharges Its Duck Pride

The Oregon Pride chapter of the University of Oregon Alumni Association has a new Board of Directors in place, and is looking to expand its offerings to the UO’s LGBTQIAA alumni community in 2015 and beyond.

Spearheading the move to make the chapter more active were UOAA Senior Director Anthony McAdoo and student associate Casey Edwards, who looked through 25 years’ worth of graduates who were either on the Out List or who went through Lavender Graduation. Edwards contacted approximately 600 Ducks to obtain updated information, and to gauge who was interested in organizing the board.

"The group's formal foundation is something I'm proud to say I'm part of, and I encourage other alumni and students to get involved," said Ryan Coussens, BA '06.

"At its core, this group is about building and fostering strong relationships among LGBTQ alumni, students, and supporters of the University of Oregon."

The chapter, which has existed almost solely on social media for the last few years, is being managed by the UOAA in partnership with LGBTESSP. The chapter and its ten board members are moving quickly, too, holding their first meeting on June 11 and their first event at Portland Pride on June 13.

"A lot of times, students who are of marginalized identities don’t have someone to connect with, or talk to about how going through college while identifying differently to the mainstream is a different experience for college students," said Edwards. "Being able to bridge that gap and find a connection between alumni and current students is our ultimate goal."
