A Fond Farewell

By UO Student Lili Wagner

After years of dedicated service to the University of Oregon Alumni Association and the San Diego Ducks, Brenda Gerard, BA ’96 will be moving to Las Vegas and concluding her involvement with the chapter.

“I was originally introduced to the Alumni Association by a cousin who served on the national board,” Gerard explains. “I thought it was a great way to stay connected with fellow Ducks outside of Oregon.”

Gerard began volunteering as the events chair, planning events such as Taste of Oregon, Pac-12 at Petco Park, and Duckmas. Eventually, she took on the role of president.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to give back,” she says. “I love connecting with fellow alumni, sharing that kinship and fondness in our hearts for the Ducks, and being able to do good with that energy.”

Over her time with the San Diego Ducks, Gerard was crucial to the planning of fundraising events for the chapter’s scholarship fund.

“Our primary sources of fundraising for our scholarship are our watch parties—the venue we host at donates money per guest that attends the event—and our annual Taste of Oregon, a dinner and wine tasting.”

Each year the San Diego Ducks award between one and three scholarships to local students attending the University of Oregon. Gerard continues, “Over the past ten years we’ve awarded at least ten scholarships to help students achieve their university goals.”

After years of successful fundraising efforts and immeasurable contributions to the San Diego Ducks, Gerard will be leaving the chapter to move to Las Vegas.

“I’m excited about the move. I’m excited to be doing something new. But I’m going to be missing the Duck network. Don’t be too surprised if another chapter pops up in Nevada soon,” she joked.
