Each year, thousands of Ducks enjoy chapter events, such as the DC chapter's holiday party which benefits students interning in DC.
UOAA Chapter Events Preview
By UO Student Lili Wagner
Are you one of the thousands of UOAA members who took advantage of regional or special interest chapter events last year? Or maybe you missed out on these exciting events and want to join the fun! In 2016, UOAA chapters will host an array of events to connect alumni and friends of the university across the country and around the globe.
Each spring, Hawaii Ducks gather for their annual Ducks on the Beach reception, silent auction, and fundraiser in Honolulu benefitting the Duane Cargill Memorial Scholarship fund. 2015’s tremendously successful event had 180 Ducks in attendance who were able to raise $10,000 for the chapter’s scholarship, which helped four UO students. This year, the Hawaii chapter celebrates the twelfth year of this popular philanthropy event.
Southern California Ducks can flock to the San Diego chapter’s annual Taste of Oregon event, which is entering its thirteenth year. This scholarship fundraiser invites alumni and friends to a special wine tasting and auction, benefiting local students entering the University of Oregon. Over the past ten years the San Diego Ducks have been able to award more than 10 scholarships to students thanks to their yearly fundraising efforts.
The second annual Duck Week will be coming to California in 2016 as well! During football season, as the Ducks hit the road for away games in California, the UOAA will be bringing a host of events southward for a weeklong celebration of all things Oregon. Last year’s Duck Week in Seattle included a networking event, presidential reception, pep rally, and tailgate, and culminated in the clash with UW! California Ducks won’t want to miss this spirited week of events.
For those in the Mid-Atlantic, the DC Ducks Holiday Party is a festive end-of-year tradition. Another scholarship fundraiser, the annual Holiday Party brings together Ducks to enjoy heavy hors d'oeuvres, Oregon beer and wine, a silent auction, and an exciting live auction. From this event the chapter awards one D.C. Intern Scholarship annually to a UO undergraduate or graduate student participating in an internship program in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
In addition to these special annual events many chapters host events throughout the year, such as Portland’s Science Nights and the regular Duck Biz Lunches held in Denver, Seattle, and (coming soon) Portland. Science Nights bring professors to the comfortable setting of Widmer Brothers Brewing to offer alumni a chance to hear about some of the amazing research going on at UO. The Duck Biz Lunches similarly invite UO graduates to gather over delicious cuisine and make professional connections.
Those closer to home—Eugene, that is—also have access to regular events with the Lane County chapter. The Lane County Ducks host a variety of events each year including watch parties (for away games of course), elementary school student mentoring, and art talks, hosted in conjunction with the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
Ducks abroad don’t have to miss out on the fun just because they’re far away! From the Shanghai Ducks' New Year celebration to February’s receptions in Calgary, Canada and Osaka, Japan, there are events hosted around the world for Ducks who want a little taste of home. Ducks in London and Paris should keep an eye on their inboxes for upcoming receptions in their cities, too.
UOAA chapters play a pivotal role in supporting students through both the scholarships and community they provide. Chapter involvement is fun for participants and integral to the health and success of the UOAA. To find a chapter in your area, click here.
