The Game

The Civil War, previously called the "Oregon Classic" dates back to 1894. Since the first game, there have been 120 games with the Ducks leading the series 63-47-10. Although both teams share the longest win streak in the series at 8 games a piece, the Ducks went 13 years without losing to the Beavers from 1975-1987.

The Platypus Trophy

Beginning in 1959, the Platypus Trophy was awarded to the winning school after each Civil War game. It was created by a University of Oregon art student, Warren Spady, as a depiction of both schools with its duck-like bill and beaver-like tail. It was tradition for Oregon State and Oregon students to attempt to steal the trophy from each other and in 1961 the trophy went missing for 40 years. The Platypus Trophy was found in 2005 and since 2007 has been awarded to the winning school's alumni association for safe-keeping. The Platypus Trophy is a symbol of pride and a long forgotten history for the Civil War games.

Civil War Blood Drive

Each year we partner with Lane Blood Center and the American Red Cross for the Civil War Blood Drive. A trophy goes to the winning school to show off with pride! This competition goes beyond school pride to help save hundreds of lives right here in the state of Oregon. Be on the lookout for information about the next Civil War Blood Drive and help the Ducks keep the trophy here away from those pesky Beavers.

Not Just Football

The Civil War goes beyond football season. Throughout the year, Oregon plays countless Civil War games in basketball, volleyball, water polo, and the list goes on. The Civil War is a way of life and a tradition for years to come. The energy is high and the scores are higher.
