UO History 101: Registration and Week of Welcome - Part 2

In part one of registration and Week of Welcome, the pre-registration process for Ducks in 1925, 1952, and 1971 were detailed. Now, discover how students of 1992, 1999, and 2022 get ready for the school year.

1992
Freshmen were required to submit SAT or ACT results. Some of the new Ducks participated in IntroDUCKtion, an orientation program, in the summer prior to their freshman year that allowed them to pre-register for classes and learn more about what it means to be an Oregon Duck. The rise of internet and phone access allowed the university to implement DuckCall, where students would call in to register for their classes.

1996–2003
Many of the traditions from earlier in the decade remained. The IntroDUCKtion program became more robust. Students also pre-registered for classes and received their universal UO ID card, which was used as an ID, library card, and bus pass, and was implemented in 1996. A new registration process was also introduced: DuckWeb. Though it was initially created in 1997, it wasn’t officially used for registration until fall 1999. As a result, the use of DuckCall steadily declined and was retired in 2003, leading to a fully online registration process for students.

2022
As a result of the pandemic, freshmen are no longer required to submit standardized test scores in order to be admitted. Now, initial registration takes place entirely online through DuckWeb over the course of a few weeks. Most new students still attend IntroDUCKtion as part of their orientation. Similar to the exams and assemblies from almost a century ago, new students work through online modules about the university and complete placement exams during the summer before they start at UO. Then, Week of Welcome takes place during the week before fall classes begin to greet new Ducks and welcome back current students.
