You're a Duck! Now What?

July 2, 2013
Congratulations, you’re a Duck! As you settle into the University of Oregon, there are several things every incoming student needs to know. Firstly keep an eye out for our mascot, as he loves to have his picture taken and have “mute” conversations with those around him. He’s a great Duckthrow him a pickup line, he’s sure to blush!

Oregon, having won more than 20 NCAA championships, has the most enthusiastic, energized audiences at our athletic events. Being a diehard Oregon fan, be sure to get involved in Oregon basketball’s student-run ‘Pit Crew’ or consider purchasing football season tickets. Although frustrating, the ticket distribution process is a fair game. Our best tip to getting tickets is to get on a wireless network. DO NOT use the universities Ethernet or wireless networksyou are better off using a friend’s wireless network or heading somewhere off-campus, such as Starbucks.

The school’s beautiful campus and the surrounding town of Eugene are filled with great hidden places with plenty to explore. Embrace the Eugene weatherthere’s an abundance of activities both indoors and outdoors, able to be enjoyed in rain or shine! Eugene has some of the most scenic hiking trailsbe sure to check out Skinner’s Butte where you can find a gorgeous view overlooking downtown Eugene.

Although each student seems to discover their own secret study spot, the same three places tend to remain the most popular on campus. The Buzz, a lively café in the afternoon but with great ambiance by evening, is the perfect place for those who struggle to get work done in complete silence. Looking for one’s typical quiet getaway? Check out the skylight in the EMU or the fourth floor of the library!

Joining a Freshman Interest Group (FIG) is one of a freshman’s best decisions during their first year. FIGs help new students get situated on campus quickly, teach them how to take advantage of campus resources (such as the library) and give them the opportunity to build relationships with professors.

Our best advice, which should go without saying, is get involved in campus life! The list of activities, organizations, events, and clubs is neverendingbe assured there’s something for everyone! Consider joining UO’s student government and help plan campus events, or attend the Willamette Music Festival in May which takes place on campus. Give back to the school by participating in University Day or Oregon Made Possible. Make your experience at the University of Oregon the most memorable years of your life.
