May 13, 2014

Natalya Jenney is a Senior Family and Human Services and Psychology major from Seoul, South Korea. She is currently involved an international service organization, University’s Rotaract. Rotaract gets Jenney involved with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Emerald Family Down Syndrome Network and the Relief Nursery. She is also involved with the Holden Center and the Duck Core, and many intramural sports like basketball, ultimate frisbee and flag football.

After graduation
Jenney plans spending about 300 hours interning under a wide variety of occupational therapists to make her application even more competitive for when she applies to get into a doctorial occupational program. Jenney is looking to concentrate on prosthetic use with amputee veterans and adopting mobile prosthetics to help them be more active. She wants to help them engage in a more holistic lifestyle so that they are able to live the life they want to live. Jenney is hoping to take affordable prosthetics to communities that are low income both in the United States and internationally.

Changing the World
When asked about how she thinks she will change the world, Jenney said, “in order to change the world you have to have passion, and you just follow that passion and through creating that tread you are making a positive impact and changing the world in your own little way.” Jenney is very passionate about occupational therapy and helping people live the life that they want to live and helping them become the best version of themselves.

Favorite Quote
“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” - Charles R. Swindoll.

She says that “life throws us negative things and it throws us positive things” so if something good happens to you or you have a really good day you should pay it forward. She also advises that if something really tragic happens; you ask how you are going to deal with this and what you can learn from it and take this forward. Jenney believes that sometimes when we are not happy we should transform our thinking to react to it in a better way.

Advice to others
For other students who want to make a difference Jenney offers a piece of advice: “don’t think that you can’t and don’t be discouraged.” Jenney believes that if you are following your passion other people will see that and also be inspired by you. “There are a lot of naysayers out there and my biggest encouragement is to use that to ignite your passion and to go forward and prove them wrong.” She also believes that you should feed off of people who encourage you and to be reciprocal and to give that encouragement back to them.
