At the CommUniversity Day of Service, students participated in several community service projects in order to help restore the UO and Eugene Community. Projects ranged from tree planting, helping in school gardens, bridge cleaning, trash collection, park clean up and many more! Students gathered at 9 a.m at MacArthur Court to grab a quick breakfast and listen to speakers from the CommUniversity Program, Provost Frances Bronet, and Dean, Paul Chen. From there, students split into groups and were designated different service projects. Here’s what two students had to say about their experience at University Day:
“This years 2015 Community Day of Service was such an inspiring, productive day. There were over 350 people involved, and even though the weather forecast predicted rain, it was still a fantastic turnout! Keep in mind that when this program started in 2009, only 40 people participated. There are now over ten different projects that took place, with myself participating in the Hendricks Park project. Our main duties consisted of re-barking a trail that is used daily amongst runners, walkers, and animals. Students got their gloves on, grabbed a wheelbarrow, and used a pitchfork to load up bark and haul it down the trail. Students (like myself) spent the majority of the time weeding the sides of the trail, so that the trail doesn’t become overgrown and kill all the beautiful flowers and other plants that can thrive up there when the weeds aren’t present. Everyone in our group was energetic and loved making a difference. I would recommend this day of service to all students who want to get involved in the community, and get outside for a couple hours. I can’t wait to be involved next year!”
