Ducks Go to the Capitol

January 28, 2020

The Oregon State Legislature is back in session and that means it is almost time for University Day! University Day is an event coordinated with all seven public universities in Oregon when students go to the capitol to lobby legislators on issues that impact students like you. Gaby Belarde and Hanna Mallie from our Philanthropy & Advocacy Cornerstone went up to Salem a few weeks ago for a “mini University Day,” partnering with Government and Community Relations from ASUO to get a feel for what the bigger event would look like. Here are some of their takeaways:

"This was a great way to better understand how the University of Oregon receives funding from the state... It was great to meet the senators and representatives who represent Eugene and are advocates for the University of Oregon." (Gaby Belarde, Assistant Director of Philanthropy and Advocacy)

"I think the best part was actually being able to have a voice be heard about projects students care about at the university. I had never been to the capitol and haven't ever lobbied for something before, and having that personal experience with the legislators was a really rewarding feeling since us students make a strong impression on these projects we advocate for." (Hanna Mallie, Director of Philanthropy and Advocacy)

The official University Day is Thursday, February 13th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the capitol building in Salem, Oregon. Transportation is provided for those who sign up. Our legislators are very interested when students have something to say so be a part of the powerful group that will be representing the student body’s voice. Visit the event page for more information on how the day will look and what we will be specifically lobbying for. Let's make sure the Ducks are well represented!
