FOR Board introduces three concepts for boathouse remodel

Exploring options

During the latest board meeting for the Friends of Oregon Rowing Board (FOR), Tim Meier, principal at M+C Architecture, presented three conceptual architectural options for the UO boathouse. These options were presented to the board to start dialogue, exploring the functionality of each design and how they might be used to address the needs of the team as a whole.

Option One’s scope was limited to a revision of the roof structure to provide positive drainage, neglecting to deliver the request of more shell space or storage. In comparison, Option Two and Option Three include a second floor and extra area to the east end on both levels that would meet said requests. These two options are estimated to double the shell space for storage and repair. Access for the shells on the second floor would occur on the east end by a ramp. The only difference between Options Two and Three is that Option Three offers more visual interest with its limited use of glass and change to the roofline. However, both of these options assume a complete demolition of the existing boathouse due to structural requirements. At this time, FOR is not planning to publish these concepts, as we are still in the beginning stages of development.

The next steps are to receive input from a professional structural engineer and then prepare a rough order of magnitude regarding the cost of Option Three, which will be derived from consultation with a General Contractor. In addition, we will be discussing hiring a surveyor to verify property lines, grades, and utilities. Once we have this information, we intend to update the Board and then, if approved in concept, start a discussion with Club Sports and the University.
