Spreading our Wings, Exploring the World

Hello travelers!

We live in the digital age, and photographs serve as cherished mementos of our travel experiences. I stopped traveling with a camera years ago, once I realized that my phone was all I needed to capture my favorite moments while adventuring. My photography skills are basic at best, but with my phone’s stabilization features, focus, and exposure features, I almost feel like a real photographer. In this month’s blog post, we'll delve into simple travel photography tips tailored for our alumni travelers, ensuring that every moment captured becomes a timeless memory to be treasured!

Capture Your Memories: Travel Photo Tips

  1. Optimize Lighting Conditions
Lighting plays a crucial role in photography. When taking photos with your smartphone, try to capture images in well-lit environments to ensure clarity and vibrancy. Utilize natural light as much as possible, avoiding harsh shadows and overexposure. I try to take advantage of the golden hours during sunrise and sunset, to add warmth and depth to my photos. Also, avoid using the phone's flash whenever possible, as it can often result in harsh and unnatural lighting.

  2. Tap to Focus and Adjust Exposure
I still remember the day when I learned this tip, and now I always make sure to take advantage of my phone's autofocus and exposure settings by tapping on the screen to set the focus point and adjust exposure before taking a shot. This trick allows you to emphasize the main subject of your photo and ensure that it is in sharp focus. Experiment with tapping on different areas of the frame to explore various compositions and perspectives.

  3. Using photography to meet other travelers
Don’t get me wrong, selfies are a lot of fun. And I love receiving selfies from travelers, especially when they set up the shot so they are “eating” the leaning tower of Pisa (you know who you are.) But I must admit that I sometimes want to capture more scenery in my photo with friends. That’s where our other travelers come into play. Do you see other people trying to capture a selfie? Why not go up and ask them if you can take their photo? (Remember to use the tips above to set-up the shot.) Then when you hand the phone back to them, ask if they would mind returning the favor and taking your photo. If you’re on a UOAA tour, this is a great way to get to know your fellow alumni. When you see them later at the hotel or on the ship, invite them over for a coffee or drink and chat about your day. You just might have met your new lifetime travel buddies in addition to capturing a great photo of the Amsterdam canals.

With the right skills and techniques, you can transform your travel photographs into vibrant narratives, preserving your adventures for years to come. And don’t forget to share your travel photos with me or submit a Class Note to be included in the Ducks Abroad section of the Oregon Quarterly or Shout! We’d love to spotlight you in the next edition.
