Hear an insightful conversation with Vincson Green, BA ‘83 (journalism, communications), who spent twenty-five years as an impactful store director with Target before retiring to focus on building a non-profit organization. Vincson shares his key strategies for leading diverse, high-performing teams, which include reflecting the community, talent management, and building diversity within leadership. He also discusses overcoming challenges, such as those faced while opening the downtown Portland, Oregon Target location, and the importance of acknowledging and supporting retail workers.
As a staff trainer, Vincson combined classroom instruction with hands-on experience to build up team leaders, while using storytelling to make training impactful. Vincson highlights the factors that contributed to his success in mentoring and promoting team members, emphasizing on one-on-one sharing, and creating development roadmaps.
In his post-retirement years, Vincson continues to apply his leadership skills in non-profit work and project management, focusing on building operations and fundraising from the ground up. In addition, he is a newly appointed board member serving the Black Alumni Network.
Meet Vincson Green
Vincson Green, BA ’83 (journalism, communications)
Vincson Green is a results-driven leader with a comprehensive management background in retail operations, training & development, strategic planning, and business development. Some of his key achievements include successfully opening two Target stores and promoting over 12 store employees to Store Director. Vincson has earned multiple prestigious awards for his exemplary performance.During his career, Vincson consistently exhibited leadership abilities by driving daily organizational operations and directing cross functional teams. His expertise involves coaching large teams of up to 225 team members and delivering quality customer service to attain business goals.
Following his retirement from Target, Vincson and his wife, Linda, started the grassroots nonprofit, Christ Centered Empowerment for Families. This mission-driven endeavor serves to provide education, support, and resources to families impacted by domestic violence. Led by their strong faith, Vincson and Linda felt called to lead the charge for every family member to know they are loved, valued, accepted, and safe within their home. Additionally, Vincson continues to share his expertise as a freelance project manager, partnering with diverse companies to help them achieve their goals.
Vincson received his bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications from the University of Oregon. He was recently appointed to board member for the UO Black Alumni Network.
