UOBAN board of directors positions are opening
Do you want to make a difference in the community? For many people, the ideal way to do that is to serve on a board. Volunteer board members provide the critical intellectual capital and strategic resources to power organization success and strengthen communities. You could be one of those individuals. Serving on a board is a wonderful way to support a cause that you care about. It is also a powerful way to build your own skills and expertise. With all of the exciting work opportunities ahead of us, the UO Black Alumni Network Board of Directors is seeking the following:
- Alumni volunteer applicants/candidates for service on the board of directors; and
- Two (2) student board directors. One seat will be held for an undergraduate student and one seat for a graduate student.
Qualified alumni and student candidates considered for service to the chapter board must meet some or all of the following:
- be a graduate of the University of Oregon or
- be a current University of Oregon student
- be at least 18 years of age
Students, to be considered for service, complete the student board member application as soon as possible.
Alumni, to be considered for service, complete the alumni board member application as soon as possible.
Board of Directors Term
Student positions: April 1, 2023, through June 30, 2023.
Alumni: July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2025.
Board Nominations Procedure(s)
- A candidate for membership on the University of Oregon Black Alumni Network must submit a board application (along with any resume/vitae/supporting documents the candidate would like to submit).
- Submit the application electronically or to the chair of the governance committee.
- The governance committee reviews the application and assesses the skill set and talents the potential candidate brings to the board.
- The governance committee (or a subcommittee of the group) will arrange an interview with the prospective candidate(s) [the interview can be virtual or by teleconference].
- The governance committee will prepare a slate of potential candidates and present them to the UOBAN board or the executive committee (if the board is not in session) with recommendations for membership.
- The board or the executive committee will vote on whether to invite the candidate to join the board, ask for additional information or deny the potential candidate an invitation to join.
- If the candidate is denied an invitation, the governance committee chair will contact the candidate and inform the candidate of the board’s decision (a formal letter signed by the board president will follow the initial contact)
- If the candidate is invited to join the board. The president of the board will contact the candidate and welcome them onto the board. (a formal letter will follow the president’s contact).
- After the candidate is accepted to the board, the governance committee (or a subcommittee thereof) will provide an onboarding orientation. The new member will be provided a copy of the board bylaws, board member expectations and and organization list/chart of the current Officers and board members.
- The governance committee will work with the board president to assign an informal mentor to the new board member to assist with the onboarding process.
Board Expectations
As a director, board members are expected to:
- Know the organization's mission, policies, procedures, programs and needs.
- Be responsible for overseeing the organization’s operations, serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission.
- Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements.
- Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.
- Participate fully in one or more board committees/subcommittees.
- Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.
- Active support and participation in UOAA, UOBAN, and University programs, including attending events in your local area, when possible.
- Be informed about the University of Oregon and its mission, goals, direction and any such information necessary to be an effective ambassador for the UO in the community.
- Active participation in legislative advocacy for the betterment of the UO, when possible.
- Assume leadership positions as requested and as possible. Help to grow the organization and participate in board recruitment efforts.
